Our take on Raw Diets

What is Raw feeding?

There are multiple kinds of raw diets to choose from.

BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), is feeding dogs their food in its natural and uncooked state. The BARF diet is made up of 60 to 80 percent raw meat, and meaty bones and allows for 20 to 40 percent fruits and veggies, meat, eggs, and dairy, along with supplements. The BARF model diet is the most common and popular raw diet for dogs

The recommended guidelines for a BARF diet consist of 70% muscle meat, 10% raw edible bone, 7% vegetables, 5% liver, 5% other-secreting organ, 2% seeds or nuts, and 1% fruit.

The Prey Model diet is exactly what a dog’s natural diet would be in the wild. Whole prey animals including all internal organs, blood, and glands with the fur and feathers still attached. This raw-food dog diet recommends 80 percent muscle meat, 10 percent bone, and 10 percent organ meat. (this is likely not as easily fed for most families)

How much to feed?

100-pound dog: 2 to 3 pounds daily, or two meals of 1 to 1.5 pounds each

  • 75-pound dog: 1.5 to 2 pounds daily, or two meals of 12 to 18 ounces. each

  • 50-pound dog: 1 to 1.5 pounds daily, or two meals of 8 to 12 ounces each

  • 25-pound dog: 8 to 12 ounces daily, or two meals of 4 to 6 ounces each

In other words, a dog should eat the equivalent of about 15 percent of their body weight each week.

Raw diets require time to source and prepare, which may not be feasible for all families. Storage, time, and expense are all concerns, especially for multidog households. If feeding a 100% raw diet is not feasible you can still supplement fresh food into your dog's diet.

Another option is buying a premade raw diet. Many companies offer premade raw diets.

We have partnered with We Feed Raw to offer our puppy owners a free trial box when they sign up for a meal plan subscription with We Feed Raw. A Rep will stay in touch with you to ensure you are feeding the correct amount for your puppy's weight and body type. When you get on a list we will send this information out for you to get your free kit.

This offer is exclusively for Nosam families.

Our take?

One of the biggest decisions when buying products for your puppy will be selecting dog food. This decision will determine how healthy your dog is for years to come. Nutrition is an important link in a healthy well-balanced dog. How long your Dog lives, and the quality of life during his/her life- is greatly determined by what is served in his/her bowl.

While we own a kennel and it's not feasible for us to feed raw 100% of the time we support feeding your dog RAW if you can. We try to supplement raw food in our dog's diet as much as possible. Raw food is a more biologically correct food for all canines and feeding a more correct diet can only lead to better health overall. So if you have the opportunity to feed Raw why wouldn't you? At least give the free trial a go!

At Nosam our dogs are given Raw meaty bones and are supplemented with raw food year-round as we have it available. Anytime we have the opportunity to do so we take it.
